Great Hallingbury History Society 2014-15
The History Society continues to enjoy its meetings with speakers with an attendance of 20/30 people each time.Over the past year we covered a range of topics:
Life in a noble 14th century household
The Royal Gunpowder Mills
The men of Hallingbury who fell during the First World War by Philip Hays- based on the research he has been doing
The historic houses of Saffron Walden
The Hatfield Heath POW camp - many people did not know of its existence
Pilgrims to America – why they went and what happened on their arrival
Plants in the past – and how they were used
Hi-de-Hi – a history of Butlins in Clacton - excellent and very well presented with photographs and musicLast year we organised an outing to the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth. In particular we went to visit their newly opened World War 1 Galleries which have been brilliantly constructed with artefacts, film, reconstructions and noise. Members also visited the very moving exhibit on the Holocaust whilst others enjoyed the aeroplanes and history of World War II. This section in particular had appealed to a number of school children visitors so it was another reminder that things so totally within the knowledge of many of our members is history to youngsters today.
